It is always nice to find something for free that is worth something! The old saying is, “You get what you pay for,” and another one is like it, “There is a reason that this is free” (meaning people don’t want it). But in this case, you can download Andrew Murray’s wonderful little book called Lord, Teach Us To Pray free of charge, and once you begin reading, you will see that “free” doesn’t mean worthless, not this time!
I love this kind of book, because it is mostly exhortation. Written in 1896, the years have not waned its fire. Reading Murray’s words aren’t difficult intellectually, but they are difficult in the same way football players feel their coach’s words are difficult. That is, the words push and compel. With Murray’s book, it is hard to read even a paragraph without feeling the need to set the book down and actually pray. It is a book that pushes us into action.
So click it and get it! Use it to help propel yourself to authentic times of prayer over the Christmas holidays.
Here is a sample from the book. You will see what I mean by using the analogy of a coach:
Come, my brothers! Shall we not go to the Blessed Master and ask Him to enrol our names too anew in that school which He always keeps open for those who long to continue their studies in the Divine art of prayer and intercession? Yes, let us this very day say to the Master, as they did of old, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’
Yes, to pray. This is what we need to be taught. Though in its beginnings prayer is so simple that the feeble child can pray, yet it is at the same time the highest and holiest work to which man can rise. It is fellowship with the Unseen and Most Holy One. The powers of the eternal world have been placed at its disposal. It is the very essence of true religion, the channel of all blessings, the secret of power and life. Not only for ourselves, but for others, for the Church, for the world, it is to prayer that God has given the right to take hold of Him and His strength. It is on prayer that the promises wait for their fulfilment, the kingdom for its coming, the glory of God for its full revelation.
