Resolve to Love the Greatest Treasure

Last Sunday (Jan 4), I preached a message at RMLBC called Resolve to Love the Great Treasure of Christ. The biblical text was:

Matthew 13:44-46 The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

From this passage, three resolutions for 2015 can be made:

  1. Resolve to value the most valuable treasure. Namely, God himself and our relationship to him through Christ.
  2. Resolve to rejoice in the most valuable treasure. After all, it was “in his joy” that the man goes and sell everything in order to obtain his treasure.
  3. Resolve to sacrifice for the most valuable treasure. “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot loose” (Jim Elliot).

Father in Heaven, You are the greatest Treasure of all. More valuable than money, possessions, fleshly pleasures, or a solid reputation among others. You are the only eternal being with no beginning and no ending. Your value is matchless.

So thank You, Lord, for condescending enough to allow poor, lost sinners the privilege of obtaining a relationship with You. Thank you for allowing the sinful and wicked an opportunity to be forgiven and accepted and the opportunity to enjoy such a wonderful Treasure.

I would not trade my relationship with you (and in particular redemption in Christ) for any amount of money. Not even a thousand trillion dollars. Thus, I am more wealthy than any person who has that amount of money. You have made me wealthy by offering your Son, Jesus Christ, as the great Treasure.

Lord, help your people to see the great value intrinsic to your being and to be willing to sacrifice everything else in order to obtain that which we can never loose. Amen.
